Mother Nature is the sculptor. I am merely the stage manager, curator and collector, the one lucky enough to find these particular pieces and show them for all who can see. I do the marketing needed to make sure enough people see her work. It is in my self-interest that more people appreciate and value her work, it needs to be kept safe, preserved and promoted that everybody is able to enjoy it, such is its beauty, such is its worth.
All beauty comes from her- my job, my work, is to bring it forth for a society to set its bearings by. Not everybody can see that which is right before them, I am able to see these things and bring my experiences to bear in their exhibition. If I can get the audience to catch a spark from my frenzied acts, to light the fire of curiosity, wonder, and inquiry, I have done my marketing research. I make a stage for her dance, her operatic outpourings that touch us deep inside.
As Pablo Picasso put it- “Art is the lie that helps us to see the truth.”- lying to see the truth. I make the artificial that we may value the real Show people the truth of, in this case, nature, the desert, and the beauty around us; make people gasp with wonder and joy so that they are more aware of the beauty we are losing. Teach value and respect so we know what to protect, I do this in my own way by lying.
Concrete, my medium, is pulverized and burned rock, soaked, cast and remade to mimic the rock that was pulverized and burned in the creation of an illusion. Man reshaping nature in service of the preservation of nature.
